National Acts

Bill Picket Rodeo

The rodeo is named after the legendary creator of Bull Doggin', William "Bill" Pickett. Lu Vason developed the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo Series in 1984 and as a tribute to the "Bull Dogger", the rodeo is dedicated to all the black cowboys and cowgirls of the past who helped shape the West and those of today who keep the spirit of the West alive. Touring from February through November each year, these rodeos can be seen in city arenas and fairgrounds across the country, including Columbus, Tampa, Washington DC, Virginia Beach, Atlanta, Memphis, St. Louis, Denver, Bakersfield, Oakland, and Los Angeles.

Ebony on Ice

Theater owners, Rasheed Akbar and Ali Muhammad came up with this concept when approached to feature a Christmas ice show. Ebony on Ice is an all-black cast of professional and amateur skaters, featuring international skating star Rory Flack Burghart. Their world premiere was in Chicago. It ran from April 22nd through June 9th, 2002 . Mary A Mitchell, from the Chicago Sun Times attended the show stated, "For a couple of hours, I was a kid again discovering new horizons." These skaters perform to an anthology of African-American music accompanied with laser displays.

Universoul is the first African-American touring circus. The circus is highly interactive and takes traditional circus acts and accompanies them with rhythm and blues, hip hop, urban music, salsa, gospel and jazz. The show was established in 1994 in Atlanta, Georgia with Cedric Walker as the founder. There are 45 members of the cast who perform with elephants, chimpanzees and dogs. They tour more than 30 cities a year. Their big break was in 1999, when HBO taped the show. Ever since then, they have been nationally recognized.

Our Universoul Circus Adventure

Universoul Circus has acquired the reputation of being the "Hip Hop Under the Big Top, Cirque du Soul and the most Soulful Show on Earth. Well it is all that and a bag of chips and more! I have never had so much fun at a circus. Casual Cal the Ringmaster was very engaging. He incorporated old school songs that we found ourselves singing along and dancing to. The audience participation was phenomenal spectacle, because everyone got into a groove. At almost any circus you will see things that make the audience "ooh" and "ah", but at the Universoul Circus you get out of your seat and dance to the beat.

Prepare yourself for two hours of excellent entertainment. The performers are seasoned entertainers. Lunga, a contortionist, twisted her body and after we said our oohs and ahs, she took her twisting to another level, which left our mouths open. The Gabonese Troupe were flying in the air so much, it reminded me of the movie trailers for Crouching Tiger, the Hidden Dragon. If you weren't there, you probably would not believe those performers were wireless. Each act was excellent. There is something for everyone. Lindsey was amazed at the light show (she was 1 year-old at the time). When Universoul circus comes to town, get your tickets early. Plan on seeing the Greatest Circus on Earth!
